The degradation of our environment has been very closely associated with the ushering in of the industrial revolution. The industries and business houses that flourished around 200 years back did so without giving much consideration to the environment. The trend was maintained until recently man’s polluting activities led to a large-scale decline in bird populations, creation of an ozone hole and global warming. After we realized the implications and consequences of our actions, businesses today need to ensure that they give due consideration to protecting the environment, especially if their operations lead to environmental degradation of any kind.
At the same time, stricter Government policies and an aware consumer today has led to a healthy situation where the consumers are now demanding ‘safe environmental practices’ from any company, institute or organisation which may have any direct or indirect impact on the environment. Thus, Corporate Sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments.
