Cities are the greatest of human inventions and we have developed an organic connection with them. A city is also the reflection of human ambitions and an embodiment of human creativity, governance and our capacity to innovate. A Smart City is therefore made by a Smart Society and vice versa. The concept of Smart City has been around for quite some time now. However, the recent call for making our cities smart by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has led to the adoption of this concept by the Urban Development Ministries at the State and the Centre.
The making of Smart Cities requires the understanding of how cities work, what kind of landscape and urban ecology is prevalent in addition to developing a socio-economic understanding of the city in question. Smart cities therefore also need Smart Research for their conceptualization and effective functioning.
